Comfort Beanie became a business because so many people were loving the beanies Jami was making!  If that is not testimonial enough, I don’t know what will be.

Jami, the founder of Comfort Beanie Chemo Hats, went through sixteen rounds of chemotherapy to fight her Triple Negative Invasive Ductile Carcinoma (aka breast cancer).  As with many chemotherapy patients, she lost all of her hair.  When that happened, she realized that there was not a perfect head covering on the market.

It was difficult to find a hat that fit properly and was comfortable.  Wigs were just awful for her; they were itchy, sweaty, and just overall miserable to wear.  Scarves were cute, but wouldn’t stay on her slick shiny head.  They would just slip and slide all over.  Of the beanies she bought or were gifted to her, none of them fit the requirements of both cute and comfortable.  Some were okay on the comfort side but they looked like they belonged to an eighty-year old grandma, not a forty-five year old self proclaimed fashionista with a quirky and sassy style.  As for the cute ones, they just weren’t comfortable.  Some had exposed seams that were uncomfortable on her tender scalp while many others had elastic on them that squished her head and left her with a headache.

Since she couldn’t find anything that met her needs, she decided to solve the problem herself.  It was then that she started shopping for the perfect fabric.  The number one requirement was that it had to be soft and cozy.  Next on the list was that it had to be either a cute pattern or print or it had to be a good vibrant color to match her eclectic wardrobe.  Luckily she was able to find some that met these standards.  Then it came time to find a pattern that, again, was comfy and cute.  As she searched online, she started with a turban guide.  She made a few and put them on and felt like they aged her significantly.  That wasn’t it.  Then she found a few different beanie styles.  She made one of each but there was not a single one that fit the bill.  That is when she began to piece together the perfect plan; a bit of this one, the flip from that one, and the stitching guide from another.  After several failed attempts, Jami finally found a plan that fit perfectly, had the perfect amount of stretch, and it was comfortable enough to not only wear all day, but also sleep in at night.  It was a winner all around.

She became hyper-focused on making beanies in every color and print imaginable.  Not only was she excited to have finally found something that worked, she was also glad to be doing something that kept her mind off of her situation of actively going through treatment for breast cancer.

So as you can imagine, with a drawer full of super fun beanies, she never wore the same one twice to the clinic.  That is when people, both patients and nurses, started asking her where she had gotten her cute beanies.  They were always so disappointed when she said she had made them because that meant they weren’t able to have one for themselves.  She was also often asked about them while at church or on the random occasion that she was out shopping or having dinner out.  The more she was asked, the more she wondered if this could be a business.

Then friends and family members started asking if she would make one for someone they knew that was actively in treatment and had lost their hair.  It is hard to say no when you know somebody else is in the same awful situation.  So from time to time, she would dig through her fabric stash and make another one or two beanies to give to someone.

Anytime she gifted some beanies, she received nothing but extreme excitement and also relief that they finally had something comfortable to wear.  That is when she knew that this definitely could be a business.  However, Jami has always been a compassionate and giving person.  She has spent years traveling to third world countries and doing humanitarian work around the world.  She knew that this wasn’t JUST a business, but that she could also make so many people smile if she were able to donate beanies to others in treatment.  But that can get expensive quick!  Good quality fabric is NOT cheap and making beanies takes time.  Jami spent lots of time talking to God and trying to figure out what she had: a business or a charity.

After much prayer, contemplation, and conversation with others, Jami decided that this could be both a business and she could do good by donating beanies to area clinics and hospitals.  And that is exactly what she is doing.  Jami uses much of the profit of her Comfort Beanie Chemo Hats business to make extra beanies and donate them to area clinics and hospitals.  So know that when you shop with Comfort Beanie Chemo Hats, you are not only receiving a great product for yourself or a loved one, but you are also helping to fund the gift of a beanie to another person who is struggling with hair loss due to a medical condition or medical treatment.  It really is a win-win situation.

At this time, donated beanies are being dispersed around cancer clinics in the Tulsa, Oklahoma area.  However, as the business grows, we will be looking for other clinics and hospitals to make those donations to.  I would love to hear from you and let me know where you would like to see Comfort Beanies Chemo Hats being donated, whether that is a clinic where you have received treatment or another clinic that you have a connection with.

The possibilities truly are endless based on how many people fall in love with Comfort Beanie Chemo Hats.  We are excited to see just how many Comfort Beanies Chemo Hats we can donate as the business grows!
